The quake caused numerous landslides to fall into the valley. It was necessary to blast the wreckage loose before the water level rose to such a level that the blockage would burst and flood the region. The removal of the blockage was extremely dangerous but successful, the course of the water way changed as a result, but this was a more acceptable alternative than having the area hit with a masive flood. This marketplace formerly served the residents in better times.
